The administrator of the Save Peche Island Facebook group says he couldn’t be happier that Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens has asked the city to look into dredging the canal there.

Howard Weeks says he’s been fighting for the city to take action since September after the channel became so clogged with sediment that canoers and kayakers can no longer travel on it.

“I love Peche Island,” Weeks told CBC.

“Before the end of 2025 … That's amazing," he added of the deadline for the report Dilkens has requested.

"That means we might be able to start work on the channel, you know, in the spring or whatever — soon.”

Weeks plans to reach out to Dilkens and offer whatever support he can provide, he said.
