MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Mississippi State Auditor says DeSoto County Crime Stoppers spent hundreds of thousands in taxpayer money over 10 years, without providing evidence that it ever gave a tip to law enforcement or rewarded any tipsters.
Auditor Shad White released a report on the organization on Monday.
White said the organization, which exists to gather anonymous tips from private citizens to solve crimes, received money from local governments from misdemeanor fees like speeding tickets.
Meanwhile, the auditor's office alleges: • DeSoto County Crime Stoppers paid extra fees to keep one of their two tip hotlines unpublished on the internet. • They could not produce any records showing it collected or gave tips to law enforcement over a ten-year period. They provided no records show
