LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Amid the search for answers to the UPS plane crash is a case investigators are likely reviewing.
That case is a 1979 crash in Chicago.
It was a similar aircraft to the UPS plane and it also crashed after a similar engine loss.
American Airlines flight 191 crashed shortly after takeoff from O’Hare International Airport in 1979.
It was a DC-10 that lost its left engine during takeoff, similar to UPS flight 2976. The plane crash killed 273 people.
Investigators found the DC-10’s left engine and pylon on the airfield, strikingly similar to UPS flight 2976 crash. Its left engine was also left on the airfield.
“The bulk of the left engine pylon was still attached to the engine when the engine separated from the wing,” said NTSB Member Todd Inman on Friday.
