The chief of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation has been charged with a historical sexual assault, police say.
Vincent Tacan, 65, was arrested on Nov. 5 and charged with sexual assault, RCMP said in a Monday news release.
His arrest took place following "an extensive investigation."
In May, RCMP say a woman reported a historical sexual assault that took place in a western Manitoba community in 1984.
In order to protect her identity, police say they are not identifying the woman or the community where the assault took place.
The victim told police that the assault happened when she was a teenager under the age of 16, and that the perpetrator was a 24-year-old man at the time.
Tacan is currently seeking re-election as chief, with the community set to head to the ballot box on Thursday, accordi
