SEATTLE — The Wenatchee, the state's first hybrid-electric ferry, was taken out of service on Sunday for the third time since the vessel made its debut in July.

A Washington State Ferries (WSF) spokesperson said one of the main engines shut down twice due to a fault in the "overspeed protection circuit." Engineers were able to resolve the issue that same evening, and the boat returned to service for the first sailing to Bainbridge Island at 4:45 a.m. on Monday.

The Wenatchee is a nearly 30-year-old ship that underwent a two-year-long retrofitting process to replace two of its diesel engines with batteries. It's one of the biggest vessels in WSF's fleet.
