Asthtabula, Oh (WJET/WFXP)-- It's been exactly 50 years since the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The tragedy on November 10, 1975, claimed the lives of her entire crew, including Karl Peckol and Paul Riippa from Ashtabula.

Monday night, the Riippa family talked about Paul and the difficult days after the loss of their brother.

The Edmund Fitzgerald sits in quiet darkness on the bottom of Lake Superior. It's the final resting place for 29 sailors. Paul Riippa from Ashtabula was just 22 years old.

"He wanted to make the money on the boats, 'cause he knew they could make a lot of money. He was going to go to Kent State, get his nursing degree. That's why he was sailing," said Elaine Sespico, Paul's sister.
