HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - The West Virginia Department of Health (DH) and the Bureau for Public Health, Office of Epidemiology and Prevention Services has issued a recall of a powdered infant formula.
The recall comes after the formula, called ByHeart, has caused a multi-state outbreak of infant botulism.
Infant botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by Clostridium botulinum, the DH said.
Symptoms can include constipation, poor feeding, weak cry, drooping eyelids, and muscle weakness.
The recall was announced on November 8 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
As of now, 13 cases of infant botulism have been reported across 10 states, but no confirmed cases have been reported in West Virginia.
The DH is monitoring cases state-wide.
