MARYSVILLE, Calif. — A man was injured on Thursday night when a frozen water balloon was thrown through his windshield while he was driving on Highway 20. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near Hallwood Boulevard, prompting an investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
The victim, Alex Plant, was driving home from work at approximately 45 mph when he suddenly felt an impact. "It came through the window and hit me in the face. Forced a lot of this glass into my face, in my eyes," Plant said. He described seeing the object for only a brief moment before it struck him.
After the balloon shattered the glass, Plant managed to pull over to the side of the road. Confused and in pain, he used Siri to call 911. "My eyes were already starting to close up, so I couldn't even look at the phone if I wanted to," he explained.
First responders arrived shortly after and found a piece of the white balloon lodged in the shattered glass. Plant was taken to the hospital, where medical staff spent hours removing glass shards from his face and eyes. "I wasn't even sure I'd be able to see my family, to be honest with you. It was really stressful," he recalled.
As he recovers, Plant has noticed changes in his vision. "Out of this right eye, if I were to close the left one right now, you know, everything's a little bit blurry. It's hard to focus a little bit," he said. He expressed concern about whether his eyesight would return to normal.
Plant is also left wondering about the motive behind the act. "I was a random victim, but somebody didn't randomly do this act, right?" he questioned. "Somebody went through all that trouble to, like, freeze it, tie it off, you know what I mean? And then throw it through the windshield before it defrosted. That's just crazy."
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident. A spokesperson stated that they have limited information and no witnesses at this time. Officers are working to identify the suspect and the vehicle involved. Plant and his family are urging anyone with information to contact the California Highway Patrol to assist in the investigation.
