CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Scientists from colleges and universities across Iowa warn that climate change could kill the dream of homeownership for some Iowans as insurance costs rise due to extreme weather events.
On Monday, 179 scientists released the annual Iowa Climate Statement, focusing this year on the rising cost of insurance as a result of climate change.
Insurance companies use climate models to help determine rates and anticipated losses. The scientists discussed how the effects of climate change have impacted different states like Florida and rising insurance costs in those areas.
Homeowners insurance is mandatory for anyone trying to buy a home, and with a higher cost of insurance, buying a house may not be possible for everyone as costs continue to grow.
