LE CLAIRE, Iowa (KCRG) - An Iowa couple who survived Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica are now raising money for a resort worker who helped them through the disaster.
Tony and Christina Malchodi told WQAD that they were in Jamaica for their 10th wedding anniversary when the hurricane struck. Instead of celebrating, they hunkered down and sent goodbye messages to family members as the storm rolled through.
Despite the fear and destruction, the couple said the resort staff always made them feel safe. One worker, Kayla, checked on the Malchodis throughout the storm and in the week after.
The couple decided to help when they learned almost everything in Kayla’s home was destroyed.
