Astonishing footage has shown the moment a man wielding a machete repeatedly swung at an elderly man inside a busy shopping centre in the Northern Territory.

The vision showed the hooded male launching at the elderly man before being chased out of Yeperenye Shopping Centre in Alice Springs by an off-duty officer.

Witnesses said the attacker repeatedly sliced at the other man for about a minute inside the food court on Hartley Street.

Shocked bystanders watched on in disbelief as the man wearing an electronic monitoring device carried out the attack.

Witnesses told The Australian the incident was sparked by a “family dispute”.

“He was swinging the mach­ete like a madman for 30 or 40 seconds before I started recording,” one witness said.
