SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Perhaps it’s the lowest of the low. Scammers are trying to rip off charities.

Animal rescues might be lured into a costly trick.

“We’ve received a couple of texts and a couple of emails,” said Marci Bowling with Watching Over Whiskers .

At first, the conversation seems innocent. Bowling shared one that arrived in her inbox:

My wife and I would like to make a donation this year to your organization.

“You send a cute email back. You’re just so happy someone wants to give. Once you send that back, then the game begins,” said Bowling.

The celebration is short-lived. Bowling discovered that other cat rescues got the same bogus pledge.
