Portland police on Monday said 58-year-old Thomas Houff, from Portland, was killed Friday morning when he collided with an Amtrak passenger train in Southeast Portland while riding a rented scooter.

Officers found Houff dead when they arrived at the train tracks at Southeast 11th Avenue near Clinton Street at about 10 a.m., according to a news release.

The Amtrak passenger train stopped after the collision, police said, and officers temporarily closed Southeast 11th Avenue between Division and Clinton streets while they investigated.

Houff’s death is at least the second this year on that stretch of tracks.

A bicyclist died in June after colliding with a MAX train near Division Street and Eighth Avenue.
