Calgary and Toronto are preparing for Remembrance Day with various ceremonies and events to honor military service members. In Calgary, several memorial services are scheduled, while some city services will operate on limited hours.
In Toronto, Remembrance Day is observed on November 11, when Canadians pause to remember the sacrifices made by service members in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions. At 11 a.m., a two-minute silence will be observed across the country. Although Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, it is recognized for federal workers, leading to some service disruptions.
Ceremonies in Toronto will take place at multiple locations, with attendees encouraged to arrive by 10:45 a.m. Key sites include the Cenotaph at Old City Hall, Memorial Gardens at East York Civic Centre, and the Cenotaph at Etobicoke Civic Centre. A ceremony will also be held at Queen’s Park in front of the Ontario Legislative Building.
The Royal Canadian Legion will host events at various branches throughout the city. Additionally, the 97th annual sunrise service at Prospect Cemetery will begin at 8 a.m. Fort York National Historic Site will hold a ceremony at 10:40 a.m., accompanied by guided tours throughout the day.
The RCAF Foundation will conduct a ceremony at the William G. Barker VC Monument at Mount Pleasant Cemetery Mausoleum at 10:40 a.m., followed by a sunset ceremony at 4:50 p.m. The University of Toronto will host a service at Soldiers’ Tower at 10:30 a.m., featuring a carillon recital at 10:10 a.m.
Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, which houses Canada’s largest veterans’ care facility, will hold a remembrance service at 10:15 a.m. The Toronto Zoo will also participate with a ceremony at 10:55 a.m. Veterans and serving members in uniform will receive complimentary admission and parking.
Road closures will be in effect in Toronto starting around 10 a.m. near the Old City Hall Cenotaph and at Queen’s Park from 9:30 a.m. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will operate on a regular schedule, pausing for two minutes at 11 a.m. Current members of the Canadian Armed Forces and veterans can ride TTC vehicles for free on Remembrance Day.
GO Transit will also maintain a regular schedule, offering free rides to veterans and members of the Armed Forces, along with one companion. Grocery stores and pharmacies will operate as usual, while shopping malls will remain open. However, Canada Post will not deliver or collect mail, and all major banks will close for in-person services, although ATMs will be accessible. Federal government offices will also be closed for the day.
