Nederland appoints Bruce Mills as interim city manager following Cheryl Dowden's retirement

NEDERLAND, Texas — Nederland’s interim city manager Cheryl Dowden will retire at the end of the month, city officials confirmed this week.

Because of Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) rules requiring retirements to take effect at the end of a month, the city council voted to reclassify Dowden’s position from interim city manager to assistant to the city manager through November 30.

The reclassification became effective November 3, allowing Dowden to assist with the leadership transition until her retirement.

At the same meeting, the council approved hiring Bruce Mills as interim city manager, pending legal review. Mills’ start date is also set for November 3.
