PORTLAND, Oregon — The Trump administration is again asking the U.S. Supreme Court to keep federal food aid benefits on hold as the government shutdown continues.

Meanwhile, Oregon and Washington have already distributed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits last week.

One Portland recipient, Elaine, who asked that her last name not be used, said she receives about $300 a month through SNAP to feed herself. When she heard benefits had been restored in Oregon, she felt a huge sense of relief.

“I was thinking, praise the Lord,” Elaine said.

She added that trying to find backup food at local pantries can be time-consuming and difficult without a vehicle.
