A tourniquet. An infantry ring. A sewing kit with needles that could still function. A good luck charm with a shamrock and the words “New Mexico.”
Those are among the few items Waldo Anton Jr. has from his father’s military service in World War I, where he served as a private in the Army.
Waldo Anton Sr. died in 1970 and is interred at Santa Fe National Cemetery. For the last six months, his banner has flown outside the entrance on St. Francis Drive as part of the Santa Fe Heroes veteran banner program. A banner recognizing Waldo Anton Jr., who served in World War II, is right next to it.
The father-son duo are featured on two of the 200 veteran banners placed along Santa Fe thoroughfares this year during the second year of the program’s operation by the Knights of Columbus at Santa Mar
