A drone crashed in Romania during a Russian attack on Ukrainian targets, according to the Romanian Defense Ministry. The incident occurred overnight as Russia launched strikes along the Danube River.

The ministry reported that radars detected groups of drones near Romania's national airspace, prompting the activation of air defense systems. One drone reportedly crashed in the Grindu area, approximately three miles south of the border with Ukraine. Military teams were dispatched to the site and found possible drone fragments. The area has been secured, and investigations are set to begin shortly.

Weather conditions in southeastern Romania hindered the air force's ability to respond with air policing missions. Alert messages were sent to residents in Tulcea County, which borders the Danube River.

On the Ukrainian side of the river, numerous explosions were reported near the port of Izmail. This drone incident coincided with Ukraine's defense against a significant Russian drone attack. Ukraine's air force stated that Russia launched 119 drones overnight, with 53 being shot down or suppressed. A total of 59 drones impacted 18 locations, with debris reported in one area.

The Odesa region, which borders Romania and includes Ukraine's Danube River ports, was one of the primary targets of the Russian drone barrage.

Drone incursions into Romanian airspace have become increasingly frequent as Russia intensifies its long-range strikes into Ukraine. The Romanian Defense Ministry noted that it had recorded at least 11 violations of its airspace by drones since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A ministry spokesperson indicated that there had been around 50 attacks involving Russian drones near Romania's borders, with 30 instances of drone debris landing on Romanian territory by mid-September.
