As temperatures drop, the D.C. government shared its plan to protect residents during winter. Hypothermia season runs from November through March.
The District's first cold alert this season went into effect Monday night and ends Tuesday at 9 a.m. , as overnight temperatures were expected to feel like 18°, D.C. officials said.

D.C.'s Department of Human Services issues cold alerts when the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures of 16°-32°, or when expecting temperatures of 21°-40° if snow, rain or hail is expected. It issues extreme cold alerts when the temperature (including wind chill) will be 15° or lower, or 20° or below if snow, rain or hail is expected.
