BANGOR, Maine — As SNAP benefits and federal heating assistance funding have been uncertain during the government shutdown, one organization in Maine that supports veterans says the demand for its services is the greatest it has ever been.

The Maine Veterans Project (MVP) is a nonprofit based in Bangor that serves vets, with the goal of reducing veteran suicide.

This includes running camaraderie-centered programs but also helping to meet veterans’ basic needs—providing food and heating assistance.

While SNAP benefits are now being issued in Maine, Doc Goodwin, president and founder of MVP, said the demand for their services has been up because people didn’t know whether they would be receiving food and heating assistance.
