Democrats have scored an unlikely redistricting win in heavily Republican Utah as a judge ruled the deep-blue Salt Lake City metro area will get its own congressional seat for the 2026 midterm elections.

Judge Dianna Gibson ruled that conservative Utah, which President Trump won by about 22% , must use a congressional map that creates one likely Democratic seat alongside three heavily Republican ones , a pickup from the current 4-0 GOP delegation.

The judge ruled just before a midnight deadline against a map put forward by the GOP-controlled Utah legislature that aimed to preserve the 4-0 GOP edge by chopping up Salt Lake County , saying it “unduly favors Republicans and disfavors Democrats.”
