Police are investigating the potential tie between a fatal crash in Illinois and video footage that appears to show a woman speaking on a TikTok livestream while driving.
The victim, identified as 59-year-old Darren Lucas, succumbed to his injuries after being struck at an intersection in Zion, Illinois, on Nov. 3, according to a Zion Police Department news release obtained by USA TODAY. Officers and the local fire department responded just before 6 p.m.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he died. Per the release, the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team also arrived at the scene to conduct "the crash reconstruction and investigation."
Zion is a city about 50 miles north of Chicago near the Illinois-Wisconsin border.
Police looking into 'validity' of reported TikTok livestream
The department is investigating allegations surrounding the crash, including a possible link to a TikTok video that appears to show a content creator speaking on a livestream when she suddenly hit a person, Fox 32 and Lake & McHenry County Scanner reported.
"On November 7th the Zion Police Department was made aware of a video that has surfaced on social media related to this incident," Zion Police said in the press release. "Investigators are currently following up on investigative leads to verify the validity of the video."
In a screen recording of the live, which has been widely circulated on several social media platforms, the content creator could be heard stating, "I just hit somebody," per the video and reports. The livestream then ended.
Zion Police said the individual involved in the crash was a woman from the area driving a 2015 Ford Edge, adding that she "remained at the scene, called 911, and spoke with investigators."
Lucas' son-in-law Chris King, speaking to the County Scanner in the article published on Nov. 7, said he had not received information about the livestream.
'The nicest guy I’ve known'
"Even then, we hold our loss tighter to our hearts, and will continue to pray for what the driver must be going through. Honestly we are trying to find our ways to live, without someone we cherished so much," King said.
King reflected on Lucas' impact on his life, adding that he's "the nicest guy I’ve known."
No arrests or charges have been filed in this case as of Nov. 10. USA TODAY reached out to TikTok for comment.
