WASHINGTON - Supporters of a federal court order to resume full food assistance payments are warning the Supreme Court that a continued delay would prolong "irreparable harm" and deepen the financial strain on cities and states across the country.

In a flurry of recent filings, groups opposing a request from Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and the Department of Agriculture urged the high court to reject the government's application to pause a lower court's ruling. The case centers on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which provides food aid to more than forty million people.
