Barely a year ago, Republicans were crowing about the inroads their party had made in New York City as Donald Trump and the GOP posted better-than- expected numbers in several neighborhoods across the historically Democratic city. There were even some Republicans who imagined that their party might have a future in urban America.

Trump’s assault on American cities, and the people who live in them, has turned voters against the president and the Republican Party that has rubberstamped his crude and often incoherent approach to governance.
