OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day in 1928, former Nebraska U.S. Senator Ed Zorinsky was born in Omaha.
After graduating from Central High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Zorinsky took part in his family’s tobacco and candy business and rose to the rank of captain in the Army Reserve.
He was elected to the Omaha Public Power District’s board of directors in the late 1960s, then became Omaha’s mayor in 1973.
Zorinsky was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976 and re-elected in 1982.
Zorinsky died in 1987 at the age of 58. Zorinsky Lake and the surrounding park in West Omaha are named in his honor.
