For weeks, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits — known as CalFresh in California — have been in limbo for more than 41 million Americans and approximately 5.5 million Californians in the government shutdown. California, along with a coalition of other attorneys general and governors, sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture late last month saying the agency must issue the critical benefits by using contingency funds.
