Sean Lewis has embraced San Diego as a military city from virtually the moment he was hired as San Diego State’s football coach.

Military themes have been incorporated into offseason workouts, daily routines and team events.

The observation Tuesday of Veterans Day, honoring military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, provides another occasion for Lewis to talk to the team about sacrifice and recognize those who have served.

“What we get to do is because there’s unbelievable men and women serving or have served to defend our freedoms and allow us to obsess on this silly game,” said Lewis, wearing a camo-themed cap at Monday’s press conference. “There are people doing much greater things and are willing to put their lives on the line for this beautiful country.
