A parliamentary spokesperson for the Treasury has responded to calls for the 5p fuel duty cut to be extended beyond March of next year.

The temporary reduction on rates for petrol and diesel drivers was first introduced in 2022 by the then-Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak .

The cut was implemented in response to record high fuel prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and was designed to reduce costs for motorists, with the rate being extended several times since.

The latest extension of the cut is set to expire in March 2026, which would lead to a sharp price increase unless it is drawn out again.

While owners of petrol and diesel cars pay duty when filling up their tanks, electric vehicle drivers have been exempt from such charges.
