Detroit's police union has a problem with a new city ordinance on body camera footage − it doesn't explicitly forbid the public release of images of police officers or other identifiable information, the union alleges in a lawsuit it filed against the city.
The ordinance approved by the council on Oct. 28, 2025 expands the current department policy that requires releasing body and dash camera footage of police shootings within 30 days to also include more cases where an officer’s use of force causes serious injury.
