An unprecedented meeting in the White House has generated bipartisan outrage.
President Donald Trump on Monday welcomed Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa into the Oval Office, marking the first such visit from a Syrian leader in the country’s history. Sharaa formerly led Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and headed the rebel forces that deposed former President Bashar Assad last December.
Sharaa, 43, fought against American forces in Iraq and was imprisoned by the U.S. military from 2006 to 2011.
“It was an Honor to spend time with Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, the new President of Syria, where we discussed all the intricacies of PEACE in the Middle East, of which he is a major advocate,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social . “I look forward to meeting and speaking
