An iconic restaurant and nightspot on Canyon Road in Santa Fe has gone out of business.

Often billed as Santa Fe’s oldest restaurant, El Farol — long a favorite late-night haunt for Santa Fe residents and tourists alike — has closed its doors, according to Freda Keller, the restaurant’s managing member, who has worked there since 2008 and has been part owner since 2017.

“Due to the investors wanting to sell the property and the economic downturn we are unable to continue operating,” Keller wrote Tuesday in a text message to The New Mexican .

Rumors about the closure of El Farol had begun to swirl earlier in the day Tuesday when a guest posted a message on the Santa Fe Foodies Facebook page. The woman said she had a reservation booked for Wednesday that had been canceled by the restaur
