BOWIE, Md. — Two Good Samaritans who helped rescue a family trapped inside a car after a tree fell during a summer storm are being recognized for their bravery.

During a powerful storm in July, a large tree came crashing down on a vehicle in Bowie, trapping a family of five inside. Witnesses say Carlos Winston and high school student Zachary Canter rushed to help, working together to clear debris and free the family before emergency crews arrived. The pair also provided first aid at the scene.

On Monday night, the Bowie Police Department presented Winston and Canter with the Chief’s Award, honoring their quick thinking and courage. The department’s ceremony was emceed by Alexis Wainwright.

“It’s a very good feeling,” Canter said after receiving the award.
