PHOENIX — A bipartisan group of Arizona lawmakers is calling on President Donald Trump to approve a major disaster declaration for two counties devastated by severe flooding in late September , according to a letter sent to the White House.
Both U.S. senators and four House members backed Gov. Katie Hobbs' request for federal assistance following catastrophic flooding that struck Gila and Mohave counties from Sept. 25-27.
The flooding, caused by a stalled monsoon system, dumped 6 to 10 inches of rain within 48 hours, overwhelming local watersheds and triggering flash floods and debris flows that destroyed or damaged hundreds of homes and critical infrastructure.
