PORTLAND, Maine — As Congress works to pass a bill to avoid a government shutdown, another significant change could be tucked into the bill, one that may impact a fast-growing industry in Maine.
A provision in the federal bill would close what's known as the “hemp loophole,” potentially ending the sale of hemp-derived THC products outside of licensed dispensaries. For breweries like Bissell Brothers, that could mean shutting down an entire line of popular THC-infused beverages.
“We’re looking at theoretically having to just shut it all down,” Lucy Henson, Creative Director at Bissell Brothers, said.
