The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has confirmed it is investigating a historical sexual assault of a Durham police officer that previously went unreported by members of the service.

The incident took place in 2016, according to the agency, but was not made public until first outlined in a report delivered to Durham police this summer, following a years-long investigation by the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) that found senior leaders at the service had overseen a “poisoned” workplace culture .

According to the report, the assault happened in Whitby in September 2016 by another member of the service, but went unreported by colleagues who were aware of the incident.

The report does not identify a victim or suspect, as much of the 212-page document, including officer names
