A Mounds View High School teacher is facing felony charges after authorities learned he engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student, according to a criminal complaint filed on Wednesday.

Ted Matthew Bennett, 58, has been a teacher at the school for 27 years. He was arrested at his Minneapolis home on Tuesday and is in custody at the Ramsey County Jail.

Charges filed late Wednesday afternoon allege Bennett and the victim had been communicating on their personal phones and email since the end of the last school year.

She told police she had been going through some hard times and had no one else to talk to, and that Bennett, who was her English teacher at the time, listened and understood her problems.
