A Salem organization held a Wednesday event in response to the ongoing government shutdown, giving out Crisis Relief food bags to children in the area.
"Our goal is simply to feed the people. It doesn't matter; there's no judgment, really no criteria. If you need food, we are here to feed you," Paula Wonner of Mt. Olivet United Church of Christ, who had a church group helping at the event, said. Wonner also said that she expected the event to feed around 400-500 people.
Wonner also mentioned that the need seems to have tripled over the year she and her church group have been helping with The Brightside Project.
