Forests and oceans are losing potency as carbon absorbers in a concerning finding for a world trying to rebalance the emissions ledger to meet climate goals.

The latest Global Carbon Budget report finds the budget to limit warming to 1.5C has been "virtually exhausted" and that fossil fuel emissions are tracking towards another record-breaking year in 2025.

Global temperature goals can still be met after a period of overshoot if the world can start absorbing more greenhouse gas emissions than it is emitting into the atmosphere.

The global research has been released on the backdrop of United Nations COP30 climate talks in the Amazonian city of Belem, taking place at a fragile time for global cooperation underscored by the Donald Trump-led US government's exit from the Paris Agreement.
