GREENSBORO, N.C. — On Tuesday, the Guilford County Sheriff's Office and the Greensboro Police Department hosted a memorial service for fallen law enforcement officers.

The service comes in the middle of National Peace Officers' Month. May 15 marked Peace Officers' Memorial Day across the country, and last week was designated as "National Police Week."

Tuesday's service featured a 21-gun salute. The event briefly closed Washington Street downtown from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan was one of several speakers who delivered remarks at Tuesday's service.

The service was especially impactful for the Greensboro Police Department, which lost Officer Michael Horan after he was shot and killed at the Food Lion on Lawndale while responding to a service call on December 23.
