GREENVILLE, S.C. —

Greenville has created a traffic management center where engineers can monitor and adjust traffic lights to improve traffic flow in real time.

Located at the city's Halton Road complex, the center controls traffic signals across the city, aiming to make commuting easier.

Using real-time data that's refreshed every five minutes, engineers can adjust the timing of traffic lights to make travel smoother throughout Greenville.

"As the city of Greenville's growing, we expect and we see a higher volume of traffic throughout the corridors each day, and we simply cannot keep designing our way out of these issues," said Dante Gutierrez, a senior traffic operations engineer.
