PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A growing parent group in South Tempe is voicing strong opposition to the Kyrene School District’s proposal to close several schools , saying the plan disproportionately impacts the district’s most diverse communities.

“Manita’s Matters” is coalition of parents and community members, formed shortly after learning that Kyrene de las Manitas Elementary was among the seven schools being considered for closure as part of the district’s consolidation plan.

“It was quite shocking,” said parent Emily Yen. “It was really about, okay, how do we mobilize the parents and the community to be aware that this is happening?”
