Standing on Washington Boulevard and looking at the Book Tower, it's impossible to know that the lower level of the renovated hotel and residences is home to a posh, 38-seat cocktail lounge that pays homage to British rock star David Bowie.

Even on my third visit to Aladdin Sane, I wasn't entirely sure which door to go through. I knew to head down the stone stairway that curiously curves at the bottom, leading toward Hiroki-San Japanese restaurant, the first Detroit venture from Hiroki Fujiyama, one of last year's best new restaurants .
