Canada has lost its measles elimination status, following recent outbreaks in certain parts of the country.

That’s a concern for many in the public health field.

Chief Medical Officer of Health for Newfoundland and Labrador, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, says while concerning, they’re still not seeing widespread transmission of the illness in the general population beyond certain unvaccinated groups where the illness is “sustained and ongoing in specific groups.”

She says measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in an unvaccinated or under-vaccinated population.

She told the Tim Powers Show on VOCM “I think this outbreak has shown just how easily measles can spread in those who are not protected, but also shows how good the vaccine is at preventing spread.”
