Keir Starmer believes no one in No.10 briefed against Wes Streeting – even though he apologised to the health secretary for the briefings against him.

The prime minister spoke to his senior team on Thursday morning amid the ongoing row which has sparked a fresh Labour civil war.

Sources close to Starmer accused Streeting of plotting against him and even suggested he could challenge for the Labour leadership after the Budget later this month.

The health secretary said that was untrue – and accused the PM’s supporters of trying to “kneecap” him .

Streeting also hit out at the “toxic culture” inside Downing Street.

Starmer apologised to Streeting for the briefings against him in a short telephone call on Wednesday night.
