Perth residents are helping charities from beyond the grave.

The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board has raised nearly $3.5 million for WA charities since 2013 through its Surgical Metals Recycling Program.

Surgical metals such as titanium from joint replacements and other medical implants may remain after cremation.

Through the board’s partnership with OrthoMetals, a Netherlands-based company, these metals are recycled so they do not enter landfill or harm the environment.

The program is an opt-out program in which families can request to have surgical metals returned rather than participate in the recycling program.

In 2024–25, the program recycled 5255kg of surgical metals, equivalent to about 18 44-gallon drums.

All of the funds raised are donated to charity.
