A California-based non-profit is filing a lawsuit against Hyundai and Kia over labor practices by auto suppliers in Alabama they say violate Golden State laws.

Jobs to Move America (JMA), a progressive labor group, alleges that Hyundai and Kia are violating California’s Unfair Competition Law through “unconscionable labor practices.”

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, seeks a declaratory judgment and a permanent injunction requiring independent audits, monitoring and compliance verification.

The suit comes a day after a new study from Columbia University’s Labor Lab and JMA that says the use of prison labor in Hyundai’s supply chain is driving down the wages of non-incarcerated workers, and leads to environments with more frequent safety hazards.
