CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Clarksville Police Department is assisting the Tennessee Highway Patrol with a deadly crash off the interstate early Thursday morning.

Recovery crews are working to access a vehicle in the Red River from I-24 West in Montgomery County.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation reported the crash around 5:30 a.m. Clarksville Police said the vehicle lost control and plunged into the Red River near mile marker 9.

The Clarksville Fire & Rescue Department rappelled down to the river to recover the body.

I-24 West remains closed while crews work to access the vehicle, and the THP reported that the interstate will remain closed for several hours for the investigation.
