Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that the long-suppressed Tiwari Commission Report on the 1983 Assam violence will finally be shared with members of the Legislative Assembly on November 25, more than four decades after it was submitted.
Speaking after a state cabinet meeting at Janata Bhawan, Sarma said the report — headed by Justice Tribhuvan Prasad Tiwari — was tabled in the Assembly in 1987 but never made public.
The Chief Minister said the report contains crucial findings on the Nellie massacre, demographic changes since 1951, and the decline of Assamese ownership of agricultural land — factors that contributed to deep cultural and economic anxieties.
