The Maple Leafs have placed disgruntled centre David Kämpf on waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

If he clears waivers as expected, Kämpf will be an unrestricted free agent as of 2 p.m. Friday, free to sign with any NHL team.

The move is a risk for Kämpf, who will forego the remainder of his contract worth $2.4 million (U.S.) this year and next. But the veteran is betting another NHL team will be willing to take a chance on the depth, defensive-minded centre.

The move will clear $1.25 million in cap space for the Maple Leafs. Since he was in the minors, $1.15 million of his salary was considered buried.
