Construction of a $1 billion arena project at a Reno hotel-casino hit a roadblock after the discovery of ground contamination at the site.

The question now is just how much the soil contamination will affect work on the Grand Sierra Resort’s 10,000-seat arena, which celebrated its groundbreaking on Sept. 30.

Reno City Council member Devon Reese told the Reno Gazette Journal on Wednesday that GSR did find contaminated soil during its early process of site work, but he didn't know the extent.

“I did speak to the GSR representatives and they said it’s like anything that’s in this town a long time, you uncover dirt and you find stuff that you don’t want to find there, so you go out and remediate it,” Reese said. “There’s a lot of stuff in an old mining town that's on the ground.”
